Temporary exhibition at Galerie St-Hilaire

With the exhibition Equivalences (on view from 06.06. to 06.07.2024) the gallery St-Hilaire is honouring the artist John Carter (GB), member of the Academy of Arts in London, and presenting a group of original works by the artist, who has been represented by the gallery since 2017.

Opening on Thursday 6 June from 5pm to 8pm in the presence of the artist.

John Carter's work is often described as a dialogue between painting and sculpture. Committed to abstraction, Carter communicates through a reduced and coherent formal vocabulary intended to make the reading of his works clear, an approach which is reinforced by the choice of often rather muted colors. Matt and delicate, they enhance the precise forms of the work, and reveal its tactile quality and sculptural aspect.

John Carter was born in 1942 in Hampton Hill, Middlesex (UK).
He produced his first abstract and constructed works in the mid-1960s after completing his art training at the Kingston School of Art in London.
He worked as an assistant to the sculptor Bryan Kneale in 1965-1966, and in 1966 and 1968 took part in the New Generation series of exhibitions shown by the Whitechapel Gallery in London in the 1960s. His wall-based reliefs - characteristic of his work - were exhibited from this period onwards in galleries and institutions in England, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Sweden and outside Europe (Japan, USA). His first retrospective exhibition was at the Warwick Arts Trust in London in 1983.
In 2007, John Carter was elected as a member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, which devoted a solo exhibition to him in 2013.
John Carter lives and works in London.
