The canton of Fribourg is home to almost 50 of Switzerland's 70 species of wild orchid.
Creative and sometimes formidable in their pollination strategies, these flowers of rare beauty flourish in a wide variety of biotopes when the right conditions are met. As spearheads of nature conservation, the highly localised presence of orchids raises questions about the way we live in the world.
