The Lake Murten region is well known to Swiss day and weekend visitors looking to escape the hustle of everyday life. But this could soon change if the small town makes it to the top of the world’s best tourism destinations. At the beginning of May 2022, Murten Tourism officially submitted its candidacy for the international competition of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
The ambitious goal? To position Murten as one of the best tourist villages in the world! In 2021, our neighbours in the Gruyère region with the commune of the same name were awarded this prestigious title. The jury of the Swiss Tourism Federation selected a total of three villages from Switzerland for this year’s edition: Murten, Andermatt and Ernen. Out of more than 30 participating countries from all over the world, only 44 villages will make it to the finals.
Multiple criteria, including the preservation of traditions, considerate treatment of nature and close cooperation with regional stakeholders, are carefully considered for the selection of destinations.
The decision is expected to be made in December 2022. We look forward to continuing this adventure! Discover the villages chosen by UNWTO in the 2022 edition.
