A unique insight into the glass arts of the Islamic world

From the 7th century onwards, glass and stucco windows proliferated from the Iberian Peninsula to Asia, constituting an essential element in Islamic mosques, palaces, and dwellings. Their intense luminosity and colorful brilliance quickly garnered the admiration of Western architects and artists, who referenced these plaster-based windows in their sketches, paintings, and illustrations, unlike the leaded glass of European stained glass.

While the Ottoman Empire, Egypt, or Tunisia showcased Islamic stained glass at World Expositions, collectors began acquiring originals during their travels or from the art market, integrating them into their orientalist interiors. Simultaneously, the reception of Islamic stained glass was swift. Across Europe, glass painters responded to the growing demand for such windows, employing various techniques and materials.

Presenting a selection of originals from several European museums, along with previously unfamiliar iconographic and photographic material, the exhibition unveils the latest findings of the Swiss National Science Foundation project "Luminosity of the East," conducted since 2020 at the Vitrocentre Romont. Thus, it offers a unique insight into the glass arts of the Islamic world. The captivating history of Islamic stained glass is presented in the exhibition through the following seven thematic sections.
