Artist residence at L'Atelier
Grégory Sugnaux is a painter based in Fribourg. His work questions the status of images and their circulation between art history, popular culture, and collective memory. Drawing from archives, found images, and various iconographic references, he develops a painting where the grotesque, caricature, and sometimes familiar, sometimes strange figures intersect.
As part of his research residency at Labo urbain, from 2 to 27 November 2026, Grégory Sugnaux invests L’Atelier as a laboratory for experimentation. Extending an initial research phase conducted in Riex, in the Lavaux, he continues a process of collecting, printing, and assembling images, notably in the form of an iconographic atlas inspired by Aby Warburg’s method. Through documentary research, collages, and pictorial experiments, this residency allows him to explore new approaches to painting. The research process, usually invisible, becomes a central part of the work presented here.
