Early music concert, Haydn trios with baritone violin
From 1766 to 1790, Joseph Haydn was a musician for Prince Esterhazy in Hungary. There he composed symphonies, operas and chamber music for the musicians of his court.
The baritone violin experienced a heyday during which musicians, kings and princes literally fell in love with it. Prince Nikolaus Esterhazy, known as ‘the Magnificent’, was himself an enthusiastic baritone player, and there was no shortage of virtuosos of this instrument at his court. Joseph Haydn, a musician from this milieu, composed an extensive body of work for baritone, the most representative part of which consists of trios with viola and violoncello.
