For Marathon, released on 26 February, Maria BC draws from her childhood memories. The album's title refers to the petrol station at the end of the street where she grew up, symbolising departure, journey, and return. Driven by a muffled urgency, Marathon explores perseverance as a means of surviving time, exhaustion, and personal or environmental catastrophes through raw, tense, and deeply alive sonic material. Each track unveils characters marked by injustice and disillusionment, yet Maria BC envelops them in a serene voice and elegant melodies, preventing the threatening atmosphere from engulfing them. An album of textures and nuances, Marathon reveals itself more with each listen: the depth of the guitars and its unique atmosphere give these songs, nourished by memories and a melancholic ardour, an almost timeless quality.
Through its thirteen songs, Marathon takes its audience through difficult subjects while conveying hope in connection, intimacy, and interference. The artist shares her breath, her reflections, and introduces her characters, carried by a sound palette ranging from airy acoustic songs to glitchy and distorted tracks that channel chaos and disillusionment while maintaining a guiding thread in the lyrics.
