Behind the project Midwife, which was born in 2014, is Madeline Johnston, a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer. The project takes shape during a residency at Rhinoceropolis, an iconic venue in the DIY scene of Denver. While the artist dedicated over a decade to shaping a singular sound universe while actively participating in the artistic life of this community, she is now based in southern Colorado.
With Midwife, she develops music at the crossroads of slowcore, shoegaze, and ambient, which she herself describes as “Heaven Metal.” An expression that captures her compositions, which are as ethereal as they are devastating, where the sweetness of melodies meets the emotional intensity of grief. Her songs explore the many faces of loss and memory, transforming pain into a form of catharsis.
Her latest album, No Depression in Heaven (The Flenser), unfolds hazy and enveloping soundscapes, carried by whispered vocals, ethereal guitars, and writing of great delicacy.
On stage, Madeline Johnston captivates with a sober and magnetic presence. Her performances, stripped-down and deeply inhabited, invite an emotionally charged, almost meditative listening experience.
