Concert
As part of World Mission Month, Missio Switzerland invites you to a special musical vespers service at the Franciscan Church in Fribourg. The programme will feature works by the Swiss Jesuit missionary, musician and architect Fr Martin Schmid SJ (1694–1772).
Martin Schmid served as a missionary amongst the Chiquitos in what is now Bolivia during the 18th century. His compositions follow in the tradition of European Baroque whilst also recounting an extraordinary encounter between different cultures.
The polyphonic works will be performed by the soloists Joëlle Delley Zhao, Benoit Volkart, Bo Zhao and Fabrice Hayoz. They will be accompanied by musicians from the Ensemble Baroque du Léman and by Philippe Despond on the organ. The musical direction is in the hands of the Fribourg-based musician Thierry Dagon.
The audience will also form part of the musical experience: they are invited to join in singing simple Gregorian interludes. A light-hearted warm-up session will take place at the start of the celebration.
