Experimental Rock, Drone, Noise Concert
Drone-based music has a hypnotic quality, made up of duration, texture, and trance, capable of transporting the mind far away. Water Damage, a collective from Austin, is one of the most striking examples. True to their motto «Maximal Repetition Minimal Deviation», the group constructs vast soundscapes made of obsessive repetitions and slow micro-variations. Their music progresses like a long, continuous movement: a mass of hypnotic, abrasive, and immersive sound that seems to pursue an invisible vanishing point without ever deviating from its course.
All members are veterans of various projects such as Spray Paint, Black Eyes, USA/Mexico, more eaze, Thor & Friends, Marriage, SUR or Astral Spirits Records. Rather than adhering to a rigid formal approach to drone, they let their textures crack, traversed by unexpected sonic events that disturb the surface of the piece. And it is precisely in this tension that their different approaches align and intertwine with clarity. On 16 May, the supergroup released Instruments on 12XU records, welcoming two new companions: Patrick Shiroishi on baritone saxophone and David Grubbs on guitar, for four twenty-minute “reels”.
Live, Water Damage transforms repetition into a state of trance. The group can stretch the same riff for dozens of minutes, with only minimal variations as developments. Initially intriguing, almost disorienting, their music ultimately absorbs the listener completely. The landmarks gradually fade, rational space disappears, the mind empties, and all that remains is the sensation of dissolving into sound.
