The smem shows one of the largest collections of electronic music instruments in the world.
The smem, Swiss Museum and center for Electronic Music instruments, was founded in 2016 and is located in the innovation center of blueFactory in Fribourg (Switzerland). It is home to one of the world’s biggest synthesizer collections.
The smem is a living archive, designed to store, document, study and explore the instruments behind the electronic music scenes of yesterday, today and tomorrow. A place to immerse oneself in the world of synths and drum machines, whether you are a professional or a newcomer, passionate or just curious.
The museum consists of two main spaces: the Schaulager and the Playroom. The Schaulager hosts most of the instruments of the collection. It is therefore in the Schaulager that the guided tours take place, every Saturday and on request. From vintage classics to analogue rarities, this ever-expanding treasure trove offers an unparalleled perspective on the electronic and popular music cultures of yesterday and today.
The Playroom is the creative space of the smem. Built in 2018 after a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, it allows the amateur, the professional and the curious to learn, play and record on a selection of the rare and legendary instruments of our collection. The Playroom is open every Saturday for the Playroom Sessions and on request for special events, artistic residencies and more. It is recommended to bring your own set of headphones with you, as well as a USB-compatible recording device or personal computer if you wish to record your productions.
The meeting point for both the guided tours and the Playroom sessions is in front of the Playroom.
