Rusalka, a beguiling yet elusive supernatural being, is a water nymph who, after crossing paths with a prince, dreams of only one thing:
she wants to become human so she can live out her love. But this metamorphosis comes at a high price—she must give up her ability to speak. She stands before the man she loves, mute. In Netia Jones' production, Antonín Dvořák's opera takes us into the depths of transformation and loss, refined by unforgettable pieces of music, including the famous song to the moon, in which romanticism and Czech folklore influences intermingle. The librettist Jaroslav Kvapil was inspired by various old fairy tales and legends, including Andersen's The Little Mermaid and Kytice by Karel Jaromir Erben. It is being performed for the first time by the NOF-Neue Oper Freiburg and is a work with many dimensions, both poetic and philosophical. Rusalka premiered in Prague in 1901 and remains
one of the most performed Czech operas in the world.
