The Rake's Progress
Opera in 3 acts by Igor Stravinsky

In discovering Hogarth's engravings, cruel, human, and relentless, Stravinsky reads the excess, the fall, the moral vertigo of a society in transformation. They become the matrix of a musical language sharpened like a scalpel, taut between the grotesque and the sublime. The libretto by Auden and Kallman captures the muted violence of lost illusions and the rhythm of a city where everything can tip. More than just a moral tale, it is a lucid parable about our fragilities, a story where humour and shadow contend for every measure. The score revisits Mozart with jubilant precision, subverting the codes and transforming the homage into a manifesto of independence.
