On request Fribourg Tourism organises guided tours of the cathedral.
2 choices of visits are offered to you:
Visit of the cathedral (1h)
According to legend, its 74-meter high bell tower was left unfinished due to lack of money. The cathedral, built between 1283 and 1490, is a true Gothic jewel.
During a one-hour guided tour, you will see the Gothic choir stalls, the chapel of the Holy Sepulchre and the altar of the modern era. You will also discover some selected stained glass windows of Alfred Manessier.
Guided tour of the cathedral's stained glass windows (1.5 hours)
This tour focuses on the stained glass windows by Joseph Mehoffer. In his paintings for the stained glass windows,he moved away from flat effects to illusionistic effects. In this way, the artist depicted countless evangelical, but also historical stories, enchanted in the mysterious world of symbols. During the visit, you can discover these symbols. At the same time, you will not only learn about the stories, but you will also discover the beauty of the new sacred art.
