With its seven levels, the Morat gate tower was and remains the most monumental of all the towers that punctuate Fribourg's fortifications.
It was erected between 1411 and 1414. Rectangular in plan (10.5 x 12 m) and 34 m high, the Porte de Morat is the town's most imposing fortification. Originally, the tower was opened at the throat, i.e. on the town side, so that in the event of capture by an assailant, the latter could not use the tower against the town itself.
In 1482, a boulevard was added to the structure.
In 1888, the advanced 15th-century structure was demolished to allow the street to be widened. New opening in 1950, this time through the surrounding wall.
