From water lilies to edelweiss, nearly 5000 plant species flourish in the Botanical Garden of the University of Fribourg.
Open free of charge every day of the year, the Botanical Garden of the Universtiy of Fribourg is a jewel of nature in the heart of the Pérolles district. Created in 1937 for the teaching of pharmacy and medicine, it has now become a real open-air museum, which welcomes nearly 200,000 visitors a year. On a surface area of 1.8 hectares, its living collections total 5,000 plant species, divided into 20 sectors and 3 greenhouses. Throughout the year, this 100% bilingual (FR-D) garden offers the general public a rich programme of conferences, workshops and exhibitions.
In April 2023, a new area was opened with the installation of "La Cabane des arbres". This hut embodies the theme "Trees of the past - Trees of the future", and will host various events and educational workshops in the future. Three diseased larch trees were felled and now bear an umbrella-structure framework. The triangular geometry of the floor plan stems from the original positioning of the trunks, while the sharp angles of the roof give a contemporary feel to the whole, in contrast to the tradition of shingle roofing. The tops of the trunks were processed at a local sawmill into planks for flooring and benches. Finally, long ramps lead you up to the cabin, dancing between the future plantings of this new area to discover.
Visits whose theme is a general overview of the Garden are adapted to its seasonality and present more or less all the sectors of the Garden.
