6 PDO products in the canton!
Local products play a key role in our culinary heritage, and certification plays a key role in promoting them. In Switzerland, the strongest form of protection, the Protected Designation of Origin (PDO), guarantees geographical origin and local know-how.
It also attests to the historical link between the product and its region, offering consumers a promise of authenticity. The Fribourg-regio.garantie label focuses on the geographical origin of raw materials and local production.
In the canton of Fribourg, six products carry the PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) label, which is unique in Switzerland.
What is a PDO (Protected Designation of Origin)
Quality Swiss specialities with a strong link to their region of origin can benefit from this designation.
- Produced for generations with passion by cheesemakers, butchers, bakers and distillers.
- Terroir in the broadest sense, with its geographical, climatic, technical and human components that give the product its personality.
- All stages of production, from the raw materials to the finished product, take place in the defined region.
- Compliance with very precise specifications
Interprofessions
Each Fribourg PDO product is supported by an Interprofession, which on the one hand ensures that producers comply with the specifications, and on the other hand carries out promotional activities aimed at raising the profile or marketing the product.
Swiss PDO-PGI Association
The activities of the Swiss PDO-PGI Association, based in Berne, are aimed at raising awareness of the PDO and PGI concepts among Swiss consumers and providing promotional material to interested inter-professions, schools and institutions. The Association also defends the interests of its members.
