Orchards are plentiful in the canton. Traditionally, many fruits were placed in barrels to ferment and later be distilled. Mobile distilleries would travel from village to village, allowing each household to produce its own homemade specialty! Today, several distilleries still carry out this custom distillation work. Adapting to modern consumption trends, they now produce smaller quantities but with much higher quality and added value. Some spirits are very specific to the canton of Fribourg, such as the Poire à Botzi AOP or the bérudge.
