Strawberries

Strawberries are the little princesses of our orchards! By the end of May, they make their much-anticipated return.

Sweet and full of flavor, strawberries are every child’s favorite treat – and they love getting their faces delightfully messy with them. In the canton of Fribourg, several local farmers offer self-pick strawberry fields. Despite the temptation of supermarkets, it's well worth waiting for the Swiss strawberry season. Why? First, because it’s important to respect nature’s rhythm – we can’t have everything all the time. Second, imported strawberries have a very poor carbon footprint. And finally, a strawberry only reveals its full flavor when it’s truly fresh!

For several years, Terroir Fribourg has been raising awareness among citizens about the importance of choosing locally grown strawberries from the canton of Fribourg. A 2021 CO₂ comparison highlights the significantly lower environmental impact of our local strawberries compared to those imported from Spain.

To reinforce this message, the "Résiste" campaign was launched. It encourages consumers to resist the temptation of early imported strawberries widely available in supermarkets.

This initiative is part of a sustainable food vision, supporting local agriculture, respecting the environment, and promoting the work of producers in the canton of Fribourg.
