Delicate to cultivate, difficult to store, and prone to unpredictable yields, the Poire à Botzi AOP has discouraged many growers and nearly vanished altogether. "Botzi" is a term from the Fribourg dialect meaning "bunch" or "cluster." True to its name, the Poire à Botzi grows in small clusters.
This round pear stands out from most others due to its small size (40–55 mm). Its flavor is pleasant, with a slight bitterness on the finish. However, it's widely agreed that the fruit is at its best when cooked. The Poire à Botzi is especially renowned for being a key element of the traditional Bénichon menu, where it is typically served alongside lamb stew.
