Concert by the Zürcher Sing-Akademie and the Kammerorchester Basel
The genius Haydn
After two stays in London (1791-1792, 1794-1795) that established him as the most famous composer of his time, J. Haydn resumed his position as Kappellmeister with the Esterházy family and composed a series of six masses, which mark the culmination of classical aesthetics while foreshadowing romanticism. The Zürcher Sing-Akademie and the Kammerorchester Basel, under the direction of René Jacobs, present us with two of these masses: the Missa in angustiis, better known as the Nelsonmesse (in honour of Admiral Nelson, the victor of the Battle of Trafalgar), and the Theresienmesse (in reference to Empress Maria Theresa, who is said to have sung the solo soprano part).
