A full day at the Salle de musicologie, Université de Fribourg, dedicated to just intonation explored through Alain Daniélou's Semantic system. Christian Braut (Fondation Alain Daniélou, co-designer of the Semantic Daniélou-53) and Hélène Derieux (singer, musicologist, IReMus, CNRS/Sorbonne) lead a three-part programme. Hélène devoted her doctoral thesis to just intonation under the direction of musicologist Philippe Lalitte, himself a specialist on the subject. The Semantic Daniélou-36, donated to smem by the Alain Daniélou Foundation, is one of the most unique instruments in our collection: a microtonal keyboard offering 36 intervals per octave, now playable at smem.
