Semsales, a beautiful and large village, nestled around its two bell towers and clinging to the slopes of Niremont and Alpettes, is situated at an altitude of 870 metres.
Semsales has approximately 1,420 inhabitants and an area of 30 km², of which 650 hectares are forest. It is served by two TPF train stations – Semsales and la Verrerie. The N 12 runs along its western side. The Mortivue divides this locality in two and flows into the Broye below, the latter also originating in the municipality. The residents of Semsales bear the lovely nickname « Trainamanchou ». It is only in the middle of the 12th century that the name of the village appears in written documents.
In a papal bull, Pope Alexander II announces that he takes under his protection the lands and buildings belonging to the monks of the Great St. Bernard. This document, dating back to 1177, informs us that these monks maintained a priory at the place called « Septem Salis »: a name that indeed designates the village.
The municipality comprises around thirty farmers, a few industries, shops, restaurants, and small craftsmen. For tourism, there is an immense network of walking paths and hikes. Tourists can also attend the Désalpe, a superb autumn festival, all of which contributes to a harmonious overall picture of our villagers.
