The pont de la Glâne, which was originally designed as a suspension bridge, was built from stone and embedded in tuff foundations.
The original idea was to have a three-tier bridge like the pont du Gard in France; it ended up with two. Since it was built back in 1858, the the pont de la Glâne has quietly withstood the ever-increasing volume of traffic that passes over it deck. Once the preferred route from Fribourg to Bulle and to Lake Geneva region, the bridge was supplanted by a motorway link built in the early 1970s. In 1969, the authorities decided against building a new bridge, preferring instead to extend the span of the existing structure by three metres.
