the motorway bridge
The pont de la Madeleine like the neighbouring pont de Grandfey played a strategic role in the integration of Fribourg in the Swiss transport network and the national economy as a whole. The bridge was built in two stages – 1963/64 and 1968/1969¬ – and was finally opened in 1971. Building work began well before the construction of the motorway. This was because it had to be in place before the impoundment of Lake Schiffenen over which the bridge crosses. The pont de la Madeleine provided an access route to the A12 VeveyBern motorway, which was opened incrementally between 1971 and 1981.
