Landscape paintings of Switzerland and elsewhere, and lamps and decorative objects made of opalescent glass.
The works on display here mainly depict landscapes from
Switzerland and countries visited during various journeys. Visitors will
have the opportunity to see or revisit familiar places, or perhaps discover
some for the first time. The pieces on display, intended for decorative and/or practical use, are made
primarily from American opalescent glass, and capture and reflect
light. They are assembled using the Tiffany method, which differs from
that of traditional stained glass.
Biography
Sylvain Demierre
was born on the Swiss shore of Lake Geneva, in Vevey, into a family of winegrowers and
musicians. Sylvain soon found himself sitting at the family piano, but
drawing is a form of expression he loves almost as much as
music.
From his teenage years onwards, and for a long time afterwards, the covers of science fiction novels
fascinated him. In the early 2000s, Sylvain discovered digital design tools
and set about creating realistic three-dimensional representations
of imaginary worlds.
By promoting his work through various websites and forums on
the internet, and thanks to the networks the web enables, between 2007 and
2012, Sylvain realised a childhood dream by creating several illustrations for
science fiction novel covers, including those for the five-part series "La
Fraternité du Panca" by Pierre Bordage, published by Éditions l’Atalante.
In 2012, keen to reconnect with the medium, Sylvain took classes in
observational drawing with Marlies Bolliger. It was there that he made his first
strokes with an acrylic brush. But it was not until 2016 that he truly
embarked on this adventure.
Today, in her small studio in Chexbres, her favourite subjects are
landscapes and animals, with the occasional foray into portraiture.
Marie-Françoise Erard was born on the south-west coast of France but, thanks to the subject
she chose for her university studies, has spent time in
England and the United States on numerous occasions since the age of 17.
She settled in Switzerland many years ago to
be with her Swiss husband.
During a stay in the USA, she took an introductory course in
glasswork using the Tiffany method and, on her return to Switzerland, continued to
teach herself in her studio. Whilst taking part in
exhibitions, she also fulfilled commissions for a lamp shop
in Lausanne, on Rue Etraz.
Just like travelling (discovering new people and new
cultures) and teaching languages (sharing knowledge with
passion and kindness), creating warm, inviting pieces
using the Tiffany method has become her other passion. Playing with
colours, bringing them to life and highlighting the richness of glass in
motion is a joy that never ceases to delight her.
