The Bénichon is a traditional Fribourg festival that has been celebrated for centuries.
Originally, this festival was a celebration of thanksgiving: giving thanks to the gods for all that nature had provided and that had been harvested during the year. Over the centuries, the religious ceremony disappeared, leaving only the popular gastronomic festival... People eat for six hours or more: cuchaule, Bénichon mustard, broth, ham, leg of lamb accompanied by botzi pears, meringues, berries, Bénichon delicacies and double cream from Gruyère. Then it's time to dance to the rhythm of folk music.
