After four months of summer grazing in the mountains, the herds of cattle return to the lowlands, colourfully decorated.
The Alpabzug is one of the most famous traditional Alpine festivals. This autumn, a large Alpabzug will take place in Plaffeien for the 20th time. The Alpabzug has revived a tradition that had once fallen into oblivion and shows appreciation for the shepherds' tireless work throughout the summer.
Cleaning and decorating the animals involves a great deal of work, but this makes it all the more joyful when the herds are welcomed into the village by an applauding crowd.
The village centre of Plaffeien forms the heart of this event. Up to 1,000 animals arrive throughout the day.
