Number 14 of the historical tour
As soon as Peter II of Savoy acquired the rights to Romont in the mid-13th century, he founded a town and began building the fortifications around the castle and the settlement. This covered perimeter wall had three gate-towers guarding the entrances to the town. The wooden roof disappeared during the 19th century. Other towers consolidated this defensive system.
Stretching 1,500 meters, the rampart promenade is the perfect place to contemplate the surrounding countryside from Mont Blanc to the Jura mountains.
From the ramparts, visitors can admire the unspoiled countryside of the lush Glâne region. Meadows, forests and crops bear witness to the importance of agriculture in the local economy.
