Romont, In the heart of a medieval town
Romont offers you a walk through the town to discover its monuments, buildings and squares of past and present times.
A fun and engaging tour that will appeal to both young and old, thanks to the quizzes and challenges along the way.
In the 13th century, Peter of Savoy built a castle on this wooded hillside and founded a village. By the end of the century, Romont already had more than 1000 inhabitants. Pilgrims, travelers, and traders frequented the village, as its wide streets provided an ideal setting for markets and large fairs. During the Burgundy Wars—fought between the House of Savoy on one side and Bern and Fribourg on the other—Romont was burned and looted. Despite this, the town remained loyal to Savoy until Bern and Fribourg conquered Vaud. In 1536, Romont allied itself with Fribourg to remain Catholic, at which point a Fribourg bailiff was installed in the town.
Since 1848, Romont has served as an administrative center and the capital of the Glâne district. The Lausanne-Bern railway line has included a stop in the town since 1862. For a long time, the region relied heavily on agriculture, but industry began to take hold in 1935. Today, the local economy is primarily driven by small and medium-sized enterprises. Many companies have set up operations in designated industrial zones, including Nespresso, which opened a production center here in 2015. Romont has a vibrant community life, with a rich variety of cultural and sporting associations, and proudly embraces its identity as a "green town."
The region is known as the Stained Glass Country due to the presence of the Vitromusée and the many high-quality stained-glass windows found throughout the area.
