Schwarzsee nestles romantically in the foothills of the Fribourg Alps at an altitude of 1045 metres. Its sulphurous waters were used for medicinal baths some 200 years ago – reason enough to plan a trip to Schwarzsee today.
Swimming and sunbathing are particularly enjoyable around Schwarzsee. The picturesque mountain lake is ideal for a refreshing dip on hot days. The idyllic beach at Gypsera, with its semicircular wooden jetty over the water, is a family favourite. There is a playground nearby for the little ones and the Gypsera restaurant is right next door. Just a 10-minute walk away is the “Staldenmotta”, another beach in the middle of a magnificent mountain landscape.
Legend has it that the travelling Gargantuan washed his dirty feet in the lake – hence its black colour. In any case, the mountain peaks are always beautifully reflected in the smooth, dark surface. This jewel of the Fribourg Pre-Alps is always worth a visit!
Tip: There are 7 Kneipp stations around the lake, offering the opportunity to experience the natural freshness of the lake.
Water sports
In addition to classic swimming, Schwarzsee offers other activities to cool off and enjoy nature. Stand-up paddles (SUPs) can be hired by the hour or by the day for an active eouting on the lake. For pedal boats, please contact the reception of the Hostellerie am Schwarzsee.
Lake Schiffenen can also be discovered by SUP. This artificial lake was created in 1963 by the construction of the dam of the same name and is a popular local recreation area. SUP boards can be hired by mobile phone right next to the campsite. The gentle waves and the numerous bays and shady spots will make your heart beat faster.
