His real name was Robert Lapointe – though at times he also went by the name Robert Foulcan. A diver, a TV aerial fitter, a seller of baby clothes and the inventor of the Bibi binary system – a precursor to today’s computer language – as well as a singer, an actor and a mathematical genius: he was a poet of understated tenderness, which he skilfully concealed behind humour and self-deprecation. No malice, no mockery – simply love and friendship.
