The programme opens with two serenades for wind ensemble: Joseph Lauber's colourful Serenade for 14 wind instruments and Richard Strauss' youthful Serenade in E flat major, both characterised by a warm, chamber music sound.
Franz Strauss' Horn Concerto in C minor places the soloist at the centre - a virtuosic, lyrical work by the father of Richard Strauss.
Two large-scale orchestral works follow after the interval: Wagner's festive prelude to Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and Liszt's Les Préludes, a powerful symphonic poem about the meaning and transformation of life.
