The Swiss National Stud in Avenches is a unique place where horse breeding, tradition, research, and nature come together.
Located near Avenches on Lake Murten, the Swiss National Stud is the federal competence center for horses. Since 1898, it has combined tradition, knowledge, and research. It trains professionals such as veterinarians and farriers, conducts research in horse care, and is committed to preserving the Franches-Montagnes – the only typical Swiss horse breed.
The stud is open to visitors all year round. A 33-stop educational trail offers fascinating insights into the daily work with horses and donkeys, traditional crafts, and the areas of education and research.
A special highlight is the large stork colony that nests on the grounds each spring. Around 30 pairs raise their young here – an impressive natural spectacle in the heart of the Seeland region.
