A high-flying operetta - cheeky, wild and satirical! The Musikalische Komödie Leipzig in an open-air performance in the courtyard of Murten Castle.
Men are mad!
While the violinist Orpheus takes refuge in his profession and in an adventure to escape an unsatisfactory marriage with Eurydice, the god of the underworld Pluto sets his sights on her and abducts her to his kingdom - which does not displease Orpheus, quite the contrary! Later, the guardian Styx and Jupiter, the all-powerful god of Mount Olympus, also sniffed out their chance with Eurydice. And where do the women fit into all this? Juno, Jupiter's wife, naturally puts all the blame on her husband. As for Eurydice, she is enjoying herself... until she becomes the plaything of male lust. Fortunately, public opinion finally bangs its fist on the table and puts things back in order. But Eurydice has had enough of the whole circus - and prefers to go and have a drink with the Bacchae. Cheers!
‘Orphée aux Enfers’, Jacques Offenbach's very first operetta in two acts, is a veritable satirical firework display! In this mythological parody, the composer mocks the double morality of the Second Empire with irresistible humour. There's laughter, drinking and dancing - including the famous Galop infernal, which has become emblematic of the French Cancan.
