Joanna Rouiller (30) grew up in Vully and has been working for the Interprofession des vins du Vully for over two years. A few weeks before the grape harvest, she introduces us to her work and all the news about the wines from Vully.
The Vully in a nutshell
With around 160 hectares, the Vully winegrowing region is the smallest of Switzerland’s large winegrowing regions. 24 winegrowers and cellar masters share this area for the cultivation of more than 26 grape varieties, including specialities such as Fribourg and Traminer – two top wines that are grown exclusively in Vully and are protected by the Vully Charter. This document, which is also unique in its kind, was signed in 2013 and links the Vully Wine Association with a total of eleven cellar masters. They undertake to guarantee joint quality assurance for both local specialities and thus to lend them credibility and quality.
A young women from the Vully, for the Vully
After studying Communication & Marketing at the Universities of Fribourg and Neuchâtel, Joanna Rouiller first gained experience in Switzerland and abroad before returning to her home region of Vully in 2021. She takes over the management of the Interprofession des vins du Vully, which has set itself the goal of improving the marketing and promotion of the wines produced in Vully. Before an external person was responsible for better coordination between the winegrowers and external partners, it was managed by the winegrowers themselves. Having grown up in the region and having a degree in marketing, it was quickly clear that Joanna was the ideal candidate to market the Vully and its wines that she was so familiar with, as well as to coordinate the various events that involve the entire wine region.
Wine harvest 2023
The frequent rainfall this spring led to some diseases in young vines. Otherwise, the heat of this summer promises a very good result for the 2023 grape harvest in Vully. Compared to last year, the harvest for the first plots will start around 24 September. This is a difference of almost a month, which can be explained by last year’s particularly dry summer.
Joanna Rouiller is looking forward to the new 2023 vintage and recalls the importance of the Grape harvest festival. It is essential to highlight the profession of winegrowers, its values and its importance for the Lake Morat region. Vully is an integral part of this tourist region, which is particularly appreciated by Swiss guests. Close cooperation between Murten Tourism and the Vully Wine Association is therefore important in order to create offers that are tailored to the demand of visitors and at the same time respect the work of the winegrowers. In this way, wine tourism in the region can be even better promoted from 2025 onwards in the heart of the “Maison du Vully”.
