The “Bénichon” is a centuries-old, traditional Fribourg celebration.
Originally, this festival was a celebration of thanksgiving: giving thanks to the gods for all that nature had provided and that had been harvested during the year. Over the centuries, the religious ceremony disappeared, leaving only the popular gastronomic festival… People eat for six hours or more:
- Cuchaule and Bénichon mustard
- Cabbage soup
- Ham from La Borne
- Leg of lamb with Botzi pears
- Meringues with double cream
- Berries
- Bénichon delicacies
Then it’s time to dance to the rhythm of folk music.
