Explore regional route 78, the "Fribourg Pre-Alps Trail". Split into five stages, the “Fribourg Pre-Alps Trail” takes you from the town of Fribourg to Schwarzsee, then through La Gruyère, below the Gastlosen mountain chain to the Pays-d'Enhaut, arriving at the Château d'Oex, the Eldorado of hot-air ballooning.
In this fourth stage of the trail, you reach one of the best-known mountain huts in the canton of Fribourg. Walking beneath the Gastlosen is always a magnificent moment.
As you leave Jaun, you pass close to the former church (Cantorama). Shortly afterwards, crystal-clear water and positive energy pour down from an impressive waterfall. Once you have crossed the River Jogne level with La Fuessmata, follow the road to a small bridge and then enter the forest to start the climb. The path is clearly marked all the way along. As you leave the woods, rejoin the road and head towards the Les Sattels alpine restaurant. The summer parking area for the Chalet du Soldat is slightly higher up. At the next crossing, take the gravelled road that leads to the Unter Sattel and Ober Sattel chalets as far as your destination, with a magnificent view over the Gastlosen mountain chain and its vertical limestone walls, a paradise for climbers. The roof of the Chalet du Soldat appears at the very end of the walk, just behind the ridge where it was built. The Chalet du Soldat was once a base camp used to train soldiers on operating in mountainous terrain at the foot of the Gastlosen, in glorious surroundings. Today, the troops have gone, making way for climbers and walkers. You will spend the night here in a relaxing atmosphere.
