The Bénichon is a centuries-old, traditional Fribourg celebration.
At the beginning, the Bénichon was a religious event celebrating the anniversary of the benediction (Latin benedicto) of the church. Later, the Bénichon broke away from its religious background and became a folk festival marking the end of the harvest and the return of the cattle herds from the Alpine pastures. According to local tradition, you eat and drink for six hours straight or more and, if you manage to get on your feet again, dance!
