Explore regional route 78, the "Fribourg Pre-Alps Trail". Split into five stages, the route takes you from the town of Fribourg to Schwarzsee, then through La Gruyère, below the Gastlosen mountain chain to the Pays-d'Enhaut, arriving at the Château d'Oex, the Eldorado of hot-air ballooning.
This second stage of the Pre-Alps Trail is shorter and takes you right into the heart of the mountains.
As you leave Plaffeien, head through the village towards the Sense, described by the WWF as the most beautiful river in Europe and one of the last waterways in the Alpine arc still in its natural state. According to specialists, its upflow to Zollhaus is fabulous. Zollhaus also marks the confluence of the two Senses: the cold Sense, which flows down from the Gantrisch region, and the warm Sense, which you follow southwards upstream to Schwarzsee. Once you reach your destination, refresh your legs by dipping your feet into the lake.
Known as a dragon’s lair, the Schwarzsee is a place of fairytales and legends. It is also well established that the dragon is still sleeping in the water, since no-one has ever seen it re-emerge since it dived in. Visitors of all ages will enjoy a tour of the lake, following the witch’s path to discover seven of the region’s haunting legends. A book in German is available for sale at the tourist office.
