Since its commissioning in 1921, the Broc/Montsalvens facility has embodied innovation and continuous adaptation, with regular improvements aimed at optimising energy performance and environmental integration.
The Broc/Montsalvens hydroelectric plant produced its first kilowatt-hour on June 25, 1921, after three years of construction. The structure benefited from groundbreaking calculation methods for arch dams developed by Alfred Stucki, bringing to life a project initiated by Hans Maurer and Vicktor Ryncki, then director of the EEF.
Over the years, Broc/Montsalvens has constantly evolved: the addition of a fifth generation unit (1927), construction of a flood spillway tunnel on the right bank (1945), draining of the lake and reconstruction of the bottom outlet (1968), increased residual flow via a compensation turbine at the dam’s base, sediment transport remediation, and the creation of a bypass stream (2011–2021).
Further operations are planned in the coming years to continue maintaining and optimising the facility, ensuring the production of local and renewable energy.
