Alpine pasture season – UNESCO heritage status

UNESCO has inscribed the Alpine pasture season on its list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. As an exemplary tradition of the Swiss mountain regions, it combines skills, customs and rituals related to Alpine farming. And there is no better place than the Fribourg Pre-Alps to experience this tradition up close.

In addition to numerous alpine cheese dairies, which are also open to visitors, there is the demonstration cheese dairy in Pringy and the La Tzintre ripening cellars in Charmey. Hiking trails or a stop-off in an Alpine hut are a great way to discover life on the high mountain pastures. At the top of Vounetz, there is a themed puzzle park for kids, while the Musée gruérien in Bulle is a treasure trove of Alpine pasture season artefacts (currently closed due to construction work). Traditional and intergenerational events are permanent fixtures on the Fribourg calendar and help keep this age-old culture alive.
