A schoolyard transformed into a public garden
The building that stands near the Notre-Dame de Compassion chapel is the former Institut Sainte-Croix, constructed in stages from 1899; it housed the only secondary school for girls in Gruyère until 1965. The last class closed its doors in 1986. Designed by the historicist Catholic architect from St. Gallen, August Hardegger (1858-1927), the building resembles the Siegle House in St. Gallen. Since 2012, the main building has belonged to the City of Bulle. Under the name “Résidence du Marché”, the building today houses apartments for seniors, a public restaurant, and the regional toy library.
Throughout the 20th century, the park underwent various uses. Initially serving as a playground and sports field, the outdoor spaces were a place where young girls could, depending on the season, practice gymnastics, play tennis, engage in various ball games, or even go skating in winter. The majestic presence of the horse chestnut trees, a classic legacy of schoolyards of yesteryear, recalls this educational function by providing protective shade and a living link to the past. This choice is entirely in line with the philosophical principles of architect Hardegger, who was keen to harmonise the interior and exterior, whether it be buildings with their environment or with the people who reside there.
In 2020, the garden was opened to the public as a true urban arboretum. This redevelopment was thoughtfully designed, integrating a diversity of species suited to the local climate and the needs of users. Alongside the two splendid historical horse chestnuts, the park has been enriched with remarkable specimens such as the Ginkgo biloba, with its golden leaves in autumn, as well as various maples and beeches that structure the space. The paths are lined with perennials and ornamental shrubs, providing a varied palette of colours and textures throughout the year. The choice of plants includes deciduous trees, conifers, and flowers that promote biodiversity while ensuring a pleasant living and visiting space. These new trees act as natural islands of freshness, essential for the comfort of residents and walkers.
Today, the redesigned garden serves not only to beautify the urban space but also to strengthen social ties by offering citizens of all ages a place for gathering, relaxation, and leisure amidst a diverse botanical collection.
