Set amidst a magnificent landscape, Gruyères Castle takes you on a journey through eight centuries of art, history and legends.
Since the 13th century, Gruyères Castle has dominated a green hill at the foot of the Fribourg Pre-Alps. This medieval fortress now houses prestigious collections that testify to its long and rich history. Visiting it means traversing the ages and discovering its treasures: the delicate stained glass of the Middle Ages and the capes of Burgundy taken by the Confederates from Charles the Bold; the wall decorations commissioned by the bailiffs under the Ancien Régime; the paintings of Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot and the troubadour decorations of the Knights' Hall created in Gruyères in the 19th century by a colony of passionate artists.
La Gruyère, a land of legends, will also tell you the fates of Belle Luce, Jean l’Eclopé, the jester Chalamala, and the heroic women of Gruyères armed with their goats. Temporary exhibitions complete this historical and artistic heritage to rediscover the castle with each new visit.
Visits and Activities
Explore the castle and its collections with the free paper guide (available in 12 languages). Special paths have also been designed for young audiences: the Chalamala path for children from 7 years old and the Bestiary of Gruyères Castle for the youngest. On request, fascinating guided tours are organised for you. The guides accompany you and allow you to experience the long history of the place and its inhabitants. Storytellers in medieval costume unveil the legends of the castle and the region during their narrated walks. As for the youngest, guided by a noble lady or squire from the court, they can embark on a fun treasure hunt.
